Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) head coach Luis Enrique will undergo surgery after fracturing his collarbone in a cycling accident on Friday, the club have confirmed.

The 55-year-old former Barcelona manager is a passionate cyclist who frequently competes in endurance events.

Enrique has always combined his coaching duties with his love of the sport, even completing an arduous eight-day, 700km mountain race in South Africa last year.

The setback comes at a delicate moment for PSG, with the French champions preparing to return from the international break.

They face Lens in Ligue 1 on September 14 before their Champions League title defence begins against Atalanta three days later.

It remains unclear whether Enrique will be fit to take his place on the touchline for either fixture.

Recovery from a fractured collarbone usually requires surgery, followed by six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

Enrique took charge at the Parc des Princes in the summer of 2023 and has since delivered one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Under the Spanish tactician’s leadership, PSG have won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and French Cups.

PSG also claimed their long-awaited first Champions League crown last season, when they dismantled Inter Milan 5-0 in a stunning final in Munich.

Enrique also guided the Parisians to the final of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup this summer, where Chelsea beat them.

PSG have started the current campaign strongly, winning all three of their Ligue 1 matches and lifting the UEFA Super Cup after beating Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur on penalties.

Enrique was in the dugout last on August 30, overseeing a 6-3 victory over Toulouse in which Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves scored a fantastic hat-trick.

His absence on the touchline would be a significant blow as PSG seek to maintain their domestic dominance and defend their European crown.

PSG stars Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele also picked up injuries while away on international duty for France.
