Lazio are left to sweat over the future of Mario Gila who has reportedly turned down the opportunity to extend his contract.
The 25-year-old is considered a pillar in Maurizio Sarri’s plans, and has been acting as the bona fide leader of the backline in the absence of the suspended Alessio Romagnoli in the first two rounds of the season. However, he remains one of the club’s lowest earners, as his salary has yet to be adjusted.
According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Gila has rejected the club’s renewal offer, as he doesn’t intend to linger in the Italian capital for too long. It should be noted that the club is prohibited from ratifying any new contracts amidst the transfer ban imposed by COVISOC, but they can still negotiate informal agreements.
As the Italian newspaper explains, the Barcelona native could be targeting a departure next summer, or even in January, if the transfer ban is lifted and the club is able to find a replacement in the middle of the campaign. The defender’s contract will expire in June 2027, so Lazio risk losing his services at a relatively low price.
Gila has already attracted a host of suitors following his exploits last season, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bournemouth. Moreover, he continues to be linked with a potential return to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants still have a 50% sell-on fee in case of a future transfer, which would translate into a discount if they decide to buy the player themselves.
