PSG set for Lionel Messi reunion at Club World Cup | OneFootball

Paris Saint-Germain will face Inter Miami in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup. It means a reunion between the European champions and Lionel Messi, who departed the club two years ago.

Messi joined PSG from formative club Barcelona back in 2021 and, despite putting up good numbers in Ligue 1, he failed to take the club to the next level in the UEFA Champions League. He left on a free transfer upon the expiry of his two-year deal.

His exit was somewhat unsavoury. Weeks prior, he had made an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia. He was sanctioned by the club and, upon his return, booed by the fans. Messi apologised, but it proved the nail in the coffin for his time at the Parc des Princes. When asked to evoke his time in the French capital since, the Inter Miami captain has often spoken disparagingly about the club.

There will now be a reunion in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup. The fixture will take place on Sunday 29th June.
