Ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain fans unfurled a large ‘Free Palestine’ tifo at the Parc des Princes.

The large tifo, which filled the entire Auteuil stand, appeared just before kick-off at the Parc des Princes. Security were immediately asked to intervene and take it down. Underneath the large tifo was a message: “War is on the ground but peace is in the world.” Supporters in the ground did not report any chant accompanying the deployment of the tifo.

French interior minister to seek explanation from PSG

PSG reacted post-match, stating that they were unaware of plans to unfurl such a banner. “The Parc des Princes is – and should remain – a place of communion around a shared passion for football and we strongly oppose any message of a political nature,” added the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

The unfurling of the banner has incited criticism from France’s interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, who told Sud Radio that the ‘Free Palestine’ banner was “unacceptable”. He added that he would be seeking an explanation from PSG.

However, as reported by AFP, the French club will not be sanctioned by UEFA, who deem the tifo to have not been insulting. Regulations were therefore not breached by PSG.
