The Seattle Sounders face Paris Saint-Germain on Monday afternoon knowing their Club World Cup campaign is likely to come to an end in the group stage.
Mathematically, the Sounders are still alive. Realistically, the likelihood that they defeat PSG by three goals -- a feat that hasn't befallen the reigning UEFA Champions League winners since October of 2023 -- and then Botafogo defeats Atletico Madrid is extremely low.
Regardless, Brian Schmetzer's side has the opportunity to play arguably the best team on Earth in front of their home fans and make history, not to mention build momentum heading back into league play. Here's everything you need to know about the Matchday 3 clash in Group C.
Manager Luis Enrique made four changes from the squad he began the tournament with to the one that fell 1-0 to Botafogo on Thursday, a result that puts PSG's progression in this tournament very much in doubt.
While Seattle is in theory the weakest team in the group, this will be a spot where PSG can't afford to take any chances, and where they also know they'll have five days to recover if they do advance. So expect the best available lineup at the moment, whatever Enrique may believe that is.
Meanwhile, the Sounders will be trying to leave the tournament with their first points and some additional prize money.
Brian Schmetzer might make a few adjustments from the group that put a brief scare into Atleti in what finished a 3-1 defeat. But don't underestimate how important this occasion will be for the club, even if the game is somewhat ceremonial for the MLS outfit.
Gianluigi Donnaruma (GK) - Archaf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Menes - Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz Pena - Desire Doue, Gocalo Ramos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia,
Stefan Frei (GK) - Alex Roldan, Jon Bell, Jackson Ragen, Nouhou - Obed Vargas, Cristian Roldan - Ryan Kent, Alex Roldan, Paul Rothrock - Jesus Ferreira.
Once likely scenario for the match is this:
The Parisians want to make absolutely sure they get the result they need and lay it on thick with several early goals. Then, the Sounders want to make sure they can take some momentum from their CWC campaign back into league play and give a much-improved second-half effort against a PSG side that can't maintain its early urgency.
If that's what transpires it should be a compelling spectacle for the neutral, and maybe a more comfortable victory for PSG than the final score indicates.
