Paris Saint-Germain have been scoring goals for fun of late. Luis Enrique’s side scored eight across two games against Manchester City and then VfB Stuttgart in order to secure their progression in the UEFA Champions League before then brushing Stade Brestois aside, progressing 10-0 on aggregate and registering a mighty 7-0 win against the Breton side at the Parc des Princes.

However, for all that success, PSG continue to struggle against foreign sides in knockout matches in the Champions League. Those struggles continued against Liverpool at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. Les Parisiens dominated proceedings but came up against Alisson, who in his own words had “probably the best match of [his] life”. The Brazilian goalkeeper made nine saves on the night to deny PSG before Harvey Elliott netted a late winner.

A good omen for Liverpool

It leaves Les Parisiens needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Anfield next week. If they are to progress, Luis Enrique’s side will have to be more efficient in front of goal. As pointed out by Stats Foot, none of PSG’s last 72 shots against foreign sides in knockout games in the Champions League have found the back of the net. That must change – and quickly – if PSG’s Champions League dream is to remain alive beyond next Tuesday.

Liverpool, despite Les Parisiens’ bullishness post-match, will be confident of progressing to the quarter-finals. As noted by Stats Foot, no English side has ever been eliminated from the competition having won the first leg away from home in the knockout phase.
