Myles Lewis-Skelly appears to have lost the early-season battle to become Arsenal’s first-choice left-back, with Riccardo Calafiori making a strong impression since his arrival. Both players have already displaced Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney, who have moved on, leaving Arsenal with two highly rated options for the position.
Many supporters had anticipated that this season would mark the breakthrough of Lewis-Skelly as a regular starter. However, Calafiori’s form has seen him move ahead in the pecking order, presenting Mikel Arteta with a positive dilemma. For Arsenal, the competition is a luxury, as both players are talented and capable of excelling at the highest level.
It is expected that Lewis-Skelly will still play a significant role in cup competitions such as the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, giving him the opportunity to demonstrate his quality and push for more league appearances. The squad’s depth ensures that Arteta can rotate effectively without weakening his side.
Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has shared his perspective on how the club can manage the situation. Speaking to Sportsmole, he explained:
“I think Mikel will rotate them all. He can even play Myles in centre midfield when needed. He is so versatile, there is an option of right-back as well for him. Same with Calafiori, who can play at centre back or right back.
But, I have to say Calafiori has impressed in the opening three games. Scoring a goal was great, but he has looked assured defensively, gave Salah nothing and goes forward with the ball very well. He is always looking to drive forward and never lets his defensive duties slack off, he is always in the right place.”

Winterburn’s comments underline the versatility both players offer, with each capable of filling multiple roles across the defence and midfield. Calafiori’s impact has been especially noteworthy, combining defensive solidity with attacking intent, and his early displays suggest he could become a key figure for the Gunners this season.
Lewis-Skelly, meanwhile, retains the potential to force his way into the starting eleven. The season is long, and with injuries and fixture congestion likely to affect the squad, both players should receive ample opportunities. For Arteta, the challenge will be to balance playing time while maintaining competition and ensuring that each player continues to develop.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s strength in depth at left-back offers reassurance as they compete on several fronts. With Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly pushing each other, the club is well-positioned to benefit from two outstanding young talents over the course of the campaign.
