Against Udinese, AC Milan looked superb in a new system; one with three defenders and freedom for the players that needed it most. However, that quickly came to an end against Atalanta.

There was a slight sense of optimism heading into the game last night, with some hoping that the new system could create the start of something better for Milan. However, La Dea quickly derailed those hopes with a very professional job of their own.

It is not a game for the history books, far from it. Ultimately, it was not a great game of football, but this is where the Nerazzurri deserve some credit.

As Quotidiano Sportivo write, the three-man defence was ‘convincing’ for an hour, and then it was quickly dismantled by Gian Piero Gasperini’s side – something which the Rossoneri were pre-warned about in the lead-up to the game.

Only one goal went past Mike Maignan, but it could and maybe should have been more, with the system quickly becoming tangled and ineffective.

In fact, the report states that the seriousness of this season’s faults have become more glaringly apparent; even with a new system, the players struggle heavily, and Atalanta broke through ‘like butter’.

Milan can not fall back on the fact that it was a team dreaming of the Scudetto, instead, it was just a well-oiled team, something which the Diavolo are light years away from.

Considering the fixture was a test for the summer, it is fair to say new parts need to be implemented if the system is to avoid being shelved.
