A ferociously contested second half highlighted a difficult away day for Milan as Sérgio Conceição's men ran out 2-0 winners against Empoli.
In what could have proven to be a historic day for the home side on the back of never finding all three points against Milan in a Serie A fixture, a familiar face made the difference on a night defined by a pair of red cards after the half-time interval.
Before the break, neither side truly impressed at Stadio comunale Carlo Castellani, and at first, it could have been a tough night for Milan after Fikayo Tomori received his marching orders after being booked for the second time.
Empoli surrendered that man advantage 11 minutes later, however, after Luca Marianucci joined him for an early bath in their respective dressing rooms as he too was sent off.
It was all Milan from then on, however, with Rafael Leão bagging the eventual match-winner in the 68th minute, only to be followed up by a first club goal for January addition Santiago Giménez after Christian Pulisic turned provider on both occasions.
This marked a fifth-consecutive Serie A meeting where Empoli failed to find the back of the net against their more illustrious visitors, and with that, the club remains just one point clear of the bottom three.
Milan are in far better shape after tonight, closing the gap to the top four to just five points as they look to continue their progress under Conceição.
