Manchester United have suffered a torrid 2024-25 season but recent performances suggest a long-awaited resurgence.
United striker Rasmus Hojlund finally broke his agonising three-month goal drought in the emphatic 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday.
After the match, he shed light on the key instructions manager Ruben Amorim gives him before stepping onto the pitch.
He said (via Daily Mail): “He [Amorim] wants me to stretch the pitch, I think that’s quite obvious, and get me into the channels and keep keeping the centre-backs occupied.
“That’s what I’m trying to do. I think I’ve got a good amount of speed and that’s what I’m here for.
“I think obviously I’ve not been on top of my game as I wanted to, and we’re still adapting to a new system and some new positions. But I think I’ve been growing into it lately and starting to look a bit better.”
Amorim transformed Viktor Gyokeres into a goal-scoring machine during his tenure at Sporting CP.
Under Amorim’s guidance, Gyokeres featured in 68 matches, delivering an astonishing 66 goals and 23 assists.
Hojlund shares striking similarities with the Swedish forward, boasting the raw attributes to thrive in the same role.
On paper, Hojlund appears tailor-made for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, yet he has struggled to translate that potential onto the pitch.
The Denmark international’s inconsistency has cast doubts over his future at Old Trafford.
His goal against Leicester ended a painful 21-game scoreless streak, and he must seize this moment as a turning point in his career.
The £50 million-rated ace possesses blistering acceleration and lethal instincts inside the box.
However, his ability to win duels and hold up play remains a major weakness that he must urgently improve.
Amorim expects that his striker stretch defences by running into channels, creating space for teammates to exploit with late attacking runs.
Hojlund has all the tools to thrive, but time is running out for him.
If he fails to impress before the summer transfer window, United may start looking for his replacement.
