Florentino Perez’s sudden press conference and his subsequent announcement of a Real Madrid presidency election have rocked the club.
While Perez has no desire to put down his boots anytime soon, he now seeks a fresh mandate in order to regain some lost confidence.
Not much has emerged regarding who could be Perez’s potential opponents in the Real Madrid election, apart from Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme, but a few local reports have linked Rafael Nadal to the job.
Nadal, though, has fiercely denied any such reports of him possibly running for the Real Madrid election up against Florentino Perez.
The tennis star confirmed his intentions on social media, calling out reports peddling such rumours.
“I have read reports that link me to possible candidacies for the presidency of Real Madrid. I would like to clarify that these reports are not true,” he said.
Links of Rafael Nadal’s potential fight for Real Madrid presidency were always going to come, though, given his sheer stature in Spain.
Although born in Mallorca, Nadal is a huge self-proclaimed Real Madrid fan and often visits the stadium to watch matches of Los Blancos.
Nadal’s status as a global tennis star – one of the best ever to do it – would make him a popular candidate at Real Madrid.
Not to mention, the Spaniard can be perceived as ‘fresh blood’ compared to Perez, who has been in charge of Real Madrid for a while now and is already approaching his 80s.
That being said, Nadal has no prior experience of managing a football club and taking on a club of Real Madrid’s stature could represent a major risk. In any case, he doesn’t appear to be interested in the job.
