Ibrox Noise’s hit rate for picking the new Rangers manager has been, let’s be honest, patchy at best. If you go through the last three or four bosses, the record tells its own story. Picking Rangers managers is nearly impossible.

Gio

We absolutely wanted Giovanni van Bronckhorst. We were fully behind that appointment, and had circumstances been kinder to him, he would have worked out brilliantly. People forget just how incredible that European run to Sevilla was. Astonishing. League form wasn’t nearly as bad as some fans like to make out either. So no, we don’t consider that one a wrong call.

Beale

After Gio came Michael Beale, and that one we did get wrong. His record at QPR was impressive, and we assumed he could translate it to Rangers, coupled with his previous coaching stint at Ibrox. Completely wrong assumption. Ironically, he still holds the best win ratio in Rangers’ history. But he couldn’t beat Celtic when it mattered and his recruitment was dreadful. That one’s on us.

Then came Philippe Clement. We wanted him badly. He had three titles in a row in Belgium, which looked irresistible. We thought that pedigree would carry him here. It didn’t. We underestimated the sheer pressure of Rangers and overestimated the pressure of Belgium. He didn’t know what he was walking into, and we overestimated his ability. He’s probably still a good manager in the right circumstances, but Rangers was not the place for him. That’s another miss.

Hit rate

So at this point, it’s one right and two wrong. A 33% hit rate. Not great. But then Russell Martin arrived, and that was the one we nailed. From day one we were unequivocally against him. We didn’t dress it up, didn’t hedge our bets, just called it. And it’s panned out exactly as we said. That one we got spot on, and we knew the season was wasted the moment his name was confirmed.

The truth is, no one has a crystal ball. We would never claim to be able to predict the future. Picking managers is a lottery. Even the most certain appointment can blow up. Walter Smith was the last sure thing Rangers ever had. When he came back in 2007, you just knew everything would be OK. Since then, every single manager has been a gamble. And when you’re dealing with the bomb scare that is Rangers these days, the odds are even worse.

So we don’t pretend to have a monopoly on the truth when it comes to appointing managers. Our hit rate is maybe 50%, the same as Rangers themselves these days. Picking the new man isn’t for us. Unfortunately, it’s for the board. And we trust them as little as we trusted the last lot. Picking Rangers managers is nearly impossible.
