If a recent transfer update from Sky Sports’ journalist Keith Downie is believed to be true, Rangers have registered interest in Sunderland duo Dan Neil and Romaine Mundle. The Black Cats are open to offers for their fringe stars who lacked opportunities at Wearside, as revealed by Regis Le Bris ahead of their FA Cup contest against Everton.
Neil, 24, grew up as a Sunderland fan and progressed through the academy ranks of his boyhood club after a brief stint with Hebburn Town. He eventually broke into the first team squad during their League One days, and has so far made 201 appearances en route to securing top-flight football.
He was the captain of their promotion-winning side last season with 47 appearances, but has found his minutes limited this term following the summer arrivals of Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra.
Neil’s contract at the Stadium of Light expires in June, and the Gers, therefore, could tie him down on a minuscule fee in this winter window. The former England youth international would be an upgrade to Joe Rothwell, Lyall Cameron and Kieran Dowell in the middle of the park, and is expected to claim an immediate starting status at the base of Danny Rohl’s ‘three-man midfield’ in the aftermath of Connor Barron’s long-term injury.

Mundle, 22, progressed through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy but chose not to pen a new contract in favour of a move to Belgian outfit Standard Liege for first-team opportunities. However, he returned to England six months later when Sunderland snapped him up for a fee of around €2m in February 2024.
The young attacker contributed to their Premier League promotion, netting five times and laying on 2 more in 24 league appearances. But he has found himself way down the pecking order due to a hamstring injury sustained early into the campaign. Le Bris bolstered the wing by recruiting Bertrand Traoré, Chemsdine Talbi and Simon Adingra, as the Englishman only made 8 substitute appearances, primarily due to Talbi and Traoré’s absence in the wake of the ongoing AFCON.
But the left-sided attacker is rated highly by Mackems, thus unlikely to be offloaded on a permanent transfer. A loan move is the best possible outcome for all parties involved, with the Light Blues struggling for an end product from the flanks. Djeidi Gassama, Oliver Antman and Mikey Moore have not done enough to cement a regular spot, and the flair, finesse, quality and directness of Mundle would boost their title hopes amid a three-horse race between Celtic, Hearts and Rohl’s Rangers.
