Rangers frontrunners to sign Sunderland free agent Dan Neil | OneFootball

Rangers are making a major push to sign Dan Neil this summer, and are currently viewed as frontrunners for the midfielder, who will leave Sunderland as a free agent.

Neil’s departure was effectively confirmed when he joined Ipswich Town on loan in January, and Rangers reignited interest soon after. The renewed pursuit was first reported by the Scotsman earlier this month.

Ipswich went up with Neil making 17 appearances in all competitions. Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is understood to admire the midfielder from his time at Sheffield Wednesday and is driving recruitment before the new campaign.

As well as his qualities in midfield, Neil fits Rangers’ push for greater leadership. He captained Sunderland during a promotion drive and is thought to have been earmarked for a leadership role if he moves.

Rangers are also making a major effort to land Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as they seek a fast start to the summer window. There is said to be growing confidence at the club about signing Neil, and it is considered a strong possibility.

Neil was at the Stadium of Light on Sunday as a fan alongside Lynden Gooch as Sunderland booked a Europa League place for next season and will now make a final decision on his future.
