Rangers have solved major problem with Tochi Chukwuani

While we are not going to claim outright that the signing of Tochi Chukwuani is the spirit of Barry Ferguson, he plays very much the same role and the same position as Rangers’ former captain. This is a position that Rangers have looked for a solution for for a long long time.

The lynchpin role

A lynchpin in the middle, a Roy Keane, a Gerrard, a Ferguson. Rangers have sought a solution for that position for considerable years. While Steven Davis was a temporary stopgap, unfortunately age counted against the Northern Irish international and he did not last too long in that slot. We got him maybe too late the second time around. While he was world class in the six position for Rangers, it was too brief.

Chukwuani profile

Chukwuani however is only 22. He has all his best years ahead of him. He is already extremely well regarded around the world of European football. This was a major coup for Rangers to get basically Sturm Graz’s best player. He is a Danish international at youth level. He will almost certainly step up to the senior team as well.

A true number six

The reality is that Rangers now have a top quality central midfielder/defensive midfielder lynchpin type of six. Obviously it does not necessarily materialise that a player’s excellent CV manifests itself on his performances for his new club. But on paper Chukwuani looks very very impressive. He looks exactly what we need in that position.

Proving it at Rangers

The proof will be in the pudding on how he settles into a brand new club at such a young age. Of course 22 is not that young anymore in football. Nevertheless this is the level of signing that Ibrox Noise wanted to see.

The right market

We did not want EFL slop. Nor did we want stuff from League One. We did not want stuff from the lower echalons of Luxembourg’s third division. We wanted a top quality level player who is playing in the top flight. Preferably this would be in the Premier League in England. However the prices there are extreme.

A strong addition

We are looking at players at that level on loan as well. Chukwuani is a really good addition. Time and proof will be in the pudding of this one. We will see how it goes. For now this is a very promising addition to Rangers. It is essentially what we need.

A midfield leader

We needed a leader and a player in the middle. He must put his foot on the ball and dictate play. That is exactly what Chukwuani is all about. For around three and a half million pounds that is not a bad deal.
