Kevin Muscat has emerged as the favourite for the Rangers job, with the Glasgow side having also been linked with Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna.

Kevin Muscat is ‘emerging as the favourite’ for the vacant managerial job at Rangers, as they continue their search for Russell Martin’s successor.

The Glasgow outfit have endured a torrid start to the season, which prompted the board to sack Martin just months after his appointment.

Since then, a host of names have been linked with the role, with recent reports stating that Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna has held talks with Rangers, whilst it has been widely stated that ex-Sheffield Wednesday chief Danny Rohl is a contender.

However, in a fresh twist, TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has revealed that Muscat is now a leading candidate to take over at Rangers.

The Aussie, who had a spell at Ibrox as a player, is currently in charge of Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port, who he won the league with last season.

But, it now seems he could get his first opportunity to manage in the UK, and the chance to join Rangers is sure to appeal to Muscat, although the situation may be complicated as Shanghai Port have four games left of their domestic season as they try to secure back-to-back titles.

Obviously, Rangers are a huge club, and they will be able to offer a manager the chance to compete for trophies, and to play in Europe.

So, in that sense, it will be a relief to Ipswich fans that Rangers appear to be focusing their attention towards Muscat, as they will be keen to keep McKenna at Portman Road for as long as possible.

However, the reality is that the Tractor Boys wouldn’t have been unduly worried by the past few days, as it was always going to be difficult for Rangers to prise McKenna from Suffolk at this point.

Firstly, he showed his commitment to Ipswich last season as he signed a new and improved contract after there was talk he could join Brighton or Chelsea.

Plus, McKenna has received huge support from the board in the way he has been backed to build the team at Ipswich, so it will take a lot to convince him to move on.

Right now, the only aim for the ex-Man Utd coach will be to get Ipswich back to the Premier League, which is the ultimate for all managers at the moment, as McKenna will pit himself against the best in the world.

After a slow start, Ipswich have picked up ten points from their past four games, which included a welcome win over bitter rivals Norwich City last time out, to leave the side 9th in the table.
