It is always difficult to separate truth from speculation when it comes to Rangers transfer stories and the summer window is full of all sorts of noise. Whether it is tabloid claims or fan accounts with sources on social media there is always something new being said every hour. In this case a Greek-based X account called AEK Guy is claiming that Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has reached an agreement to join AEK Athens. As with all social media it is hard to validate but the timing lines up with what has been reported elsewhere.

What has sparked the most discussion is the ongoing feeling that Rangers are under-selling players and that applies here too. Dessers may have had a very mixed season at Ibrox and certainly divided fans but to let him go for around €5 million or less (£2M-4Mi) is a hard pill to swallow. As Ibrox Noise discussed here there is a sense of disbelief among supporters that Rangers are prepared to accept such a modest offer for a player who cost around £4.5 million only a year ago.

AEK Athens are not a small club and have European ambitions. They are also clearly able to offer Dessers something Rangers maybe cannot at the moment. Some sources say it could be regular European group stage football while others believe the player simply wants a fresh start. Regardless another Ibrox Noise piece confirmed that fans are divided on whether selling Dessers is the right decision at all. For all his wastefulness in front of goal he still ended the season with a fairly decent tally in a struggling Rangers side.

It is also being reported here by a source outside the UK that a deal has indeed been agreed in principle with AEK Athens and it is now up to Rangers whether they sanction the move and on what terms. This would mark a quick and somewhat quiet exit for the Nigerian striker who arrived with fanfare but never quite delivered consistently.

Ibrox Noise also covered the broader issue of Rangers transfer valuations and if this deal goes through it may confirm a worrying trend of underselling.
