John Souttar’s contract situation at Rangers screams of the same echoes which led to the departure of John Lundstram at Ibrox.
Souttar is saying all the right things in the press about how much he loves the club, but then keeps his card close to his chest on details regarding a new deal. Lundstram did the same stuff, and then left for free.
We know Souttar is loving life at Rangers, he’s said that and he’s happy – but so did Lundstram.
Just like Philippe Clement about Lundstram, Russell Martin is saying positive things about Souttar, clearly indicating he wants to keep the defender.
Souttar:
“Look, I love this place. I love this club. I love being here. That’s really all I’ll say on the matter. I’ve not really heard much recently, so all I can do is train hard every day. Every day I step on the pitch, I enjoy playing for Rangers because I know how special the club is to play for Every time I step on the pitch, I give it 100 percent, and I’m sure the rest will take care of themselves.”
Adding:
“Look, whatever happens, will happen. All I can say is, every time I pull on that jersey, I’m honoured, and that will never change. Every time I step on that pitch, I’ll give everything. Not really (not distracted), to be honest. There’s a lot on my mind about how we’re playing, to be honest. I don’t have much time to think about anything else. But as I say, look, I love being here. That’s the main thing.”
Russell Martin:
“It’s not my job, mate, so I’m really pleased about that. John knows how I feel about him, Kevin and the gang know how I feel about him, and I think he’s been great. I think he’s going to be really important for us. But on the contract front and all that, it will be dictated by John, by his agent, and by the hierarchy here. So I will keep giving my opinion for sure, but it’s not my job to sort that stuff out, thankfully.”
Martin is basically admitting that the contract offer is on the table, but Souttar hasn’t accepted it.
And that’s the bottom line of John Souttar’s contract situation at Rangers. It’s the same scenario as Lundstram. An offer was delivered which didn’t raise his salary enough, and he rejected it. He wanted to be in line with Tavernier et al as one of the best paid. Souttar almost certainly wishes similar.
But that’s guesswork.
Rangers fans have heard this tune before. Public love for the club, heartfelt interviews, passionate body language on the pitch – all of it sounds great, but ultimately none of that stops players from walking when contract talks go cold.
The danger here is obvious. Losing a starting Scottish international centre-back for nothing would be a blow. Especially when stability and consistency at the back have been in short supply in recent seasons. Souttar has been through injury, battle, and form dips, yet has still earned his place and the manager’s backing.
We will see if Souttar, his agent and the club can come to agreement.
