Rangers vs Hibernian – Match Preview and Team News

  1. Date: Saturday, 20th September.
  2. Kick-off: 5:45pm BST.
  3. Venue: Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers Team News

Rangers could hand first-team debuts to deadline day signings Derek Cornelius and Youssef Chermiti after their substitute appearance last week against Hearts, with Russell Martin desperately needing to turn around the club’s fortunes. Nicolas Raskin remains out of the squad due to an ongoing dispute with the manager.

Joe Rothwell, Kieran Dowell, and Bailey Rice are all doubts for Saturday’s crucial tie. Dujon Sterling is also ruled out through injury. Canadian defender Cornelius joined on loan from Marseille with an option to buy, while Portuguese striker Chermiti arrived from Everton for £8million, becoming Rangers’ most expensive signing since 2000.

Hibernian Team News

Joe Newell remains sidelined with his long-term groin injury and will not feature, having been out since December 2024. David Gray has otherwise kept his squad relatively stable, with the rest of the team available for selection.

Kieron Bowie has emerged as Hibernian’s key attacking threat this season, already netting four goals. The 22-year-old striker will spearhead Hibs’ attack alongside Martin Boyle and Jamie McGrath.

Form

Rangers

Russell Martin’s side have endured their worst start to a Scottish Premiership season since 1978, failing to win any of their opening five league matches. The Gers suffered a humiliating 2-0 home defeat to Hearts in their last outing, leaving them languishing in 10th place. Their Champions League campaign ended in disaster with a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge, adding to the mounting pressure on Martin as fans started demanding his departure from the club.

Hibernian

David Gray’s men have shown greater resilience this term, sitting third in the Scottish Premiership despite playing one game fewer than the top two. Hibs have only lost three times across all competitions but have drawn their last three league fixtures.

Their Conference League dreams ended heartbreakingly against Legia Warsaw, losing 5-4 aggregate, though they showed tremendous character in the playoff.

Predicted Lineups

Rangers: Butland; Tavernier, Souttar, Cornelius, Meghoma; Barron, Diomande; Gassama, Aasgaard, Moore; Chermiti.

Hibernian: Smith; O’Hora, Hanley, Iredale; C Cadden, Mulligan, Levitt, N Cadden; Boyle, McGrath; Bowie.
