If there was one signing this summer Ibrox Noise had high hopes for, it was on-loan Tottenham Hotspur winger Mikey Moore.
With a market value of around €18M when Rangers signed him, this was a major coup to secure a top-quality Premier League winger.
Moore hadn’t quite cracked the PL Spurs first team yet, the-then 17-year-old certainly shining in the Europa League. He did, however, have an excellent 21 appearances for them including 10 PL.
He was a real talent.
So when Kevin Thelwell and Russell Martin managed to bag him, it was a big deal.
Unfortunately it really didn’t work out at all, the lad being stifled by Martin, unable to shine at all like so many under Rangers’ former boss. He was actually rather awful.
And even under Danny Rohl Moore wasn’t able to bloom either – his agent memorably went to the press to complain about his lack of minutes. There was a borderline veiled threat in there too.
It wasn’t a good look.
But it did cause a shift.
Moore started to shine more – placed as a 10 under Rohl, instead of going wide, the attacker was centralised more, and the goals and assists have started to slightly follow.
4 goals and assists in a grand total of 21 appearances is certainly not worth crowing about, but there’s been an uptick in his contribution and form the past month, even accounting for injury.
There’s even talk of the notion of trying to sign him permanently, but we can’t quite subscribe to that yet.
He’s seen a market value drop from 18M to around 16M – he’s nowhere near proven himself in the shirt.
His four contributions have been v Alloa, a crashing Dundee United, and bottom-feeders Dundee and Killie.
We’re not quite yet on board with the brand new Mikey Moore hype train.
But he is showing signs of coming to life.
If this lad keeps it up, does it in matches like Sunday’s and proves himself over time, maybe Rangers can look into something for the summer.
But he’s a long way off earning this, and as things stand there are better ways to potentially spend £15M.
Up to him to change that.
