According to Football Italia, Roma director Claudio Ranieri said Giacomo Raspadori had no interest in talks with Roma. With the forward now joining Atalanta, we revisit Ranieri’s major transfers and the ones that got away.
At Chelsea in the early 2000s, he refreshed the squad. Frank Lampard arrived from West Ham for about £11 million and became the club’s record scorer. William Gallas came from Marseille, Emmanuel Petit added experience, and Dennis Wise was moved on.
Leicester City brought the defining window in 2015. N’Golo Kanté signed from Caen and proved central to the 2015-16 title with relentless ball-winning. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy flourished under him.
Ranieri chose Kanté after weighing alternatives to replace the outgoing Esteban Cambiasso. Had another target been preferred, the partnership with Danny Drinkwater might never have taken shape at the King Power.
Kanté’s rise drew bigger clubs. After the title he moved to Chelsea for a far larger fee, and Ranieri admitted the loss was a blow. Kanté quickly won a second league crown with a different club.
There were near-misses too. At Fiorentina he tried to recruit Antonio Conte, who stayed at Juventus, and Conte later led Chelsea to that title after Kanté had left. Conte is now Napoli coach. Last season Ranieri considered Kyle Walker before a Milan move, but Roma’s finances and non-EU limits complicated a deal.
