The Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona match at Vallecas was overshadowed by a storm of controversy following referee Busquets Ferrer’s decision to award a penalty to Lamine Yamal.
The decision instantly provoked heated protests from the Vallecano players, who surrounded the referee to show their anger and disbelief.
What unfolded after the incident only added more fuel to the fire. According to DAZN’s cameras, in the tunnel outside the dressing rooms during halftime, Rayo midfielder Isi Palazon claimed that the referee had admitted his mistake.
“Guys, the referee just admitted his mistake,” was Isi’s exact comment, something that quickly spread across social media and became the talking point of the night.
Moments earlier, his teammate Pathe Cisse also expressed frustration, saying, “We’re doing our part, that’s it.
“We’re not counting on them,” making it clear that Rayo felt refereeing decisions were working against them.
After the final whistle, Isi did not hold back. The midfielder explained the sense of helplessness within the squad after conceding a penalty they believed was never a foul.
“In the end, being called for a penalty that wasn’t a penalty makes you angry and helpless. He could say a thousand outrageous things here.
“He’s also a person and makes mistakes, but what a coincidence that they always make the same mistakes in favour of the same teams.
“That pisses us off. Acknowledging the error honours him, saying he was wrong. I’m going to bite my tongue,” Isi stated as quoted by AS.
While acknowledging the referee’s honesty in admitting his mistake, Isi also pointed out what many critics often highlight – that the biggest calls in Spanish football tend to benefit the same few teams.
The fallout from this decision is likely to keep the spotlight firmly on refereeing in La Liga, especially with Real Madrid and Barcelona often at the centre of such debates.
