Real Madrid beat Mexican side Pachuca 3-0 on Wednesday to claim the first FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
It was an uneventful first half at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, venue for the 2022 World Cup final, but Madrid took the lead in the 37th minute with their first major opportunity.
A beautiful team goal saw the reigning European champions take control of the final, with Vinicius Junior eventually rounding the Pachuca goalkeeper before providing Kylian Mbappe with a tap-in.
Madrid needed only eight minutes to double their advantage after the restart and place one hand on the trophy. Rodrygo was the man who provided breathing room, faking to shoot with his left foot on the edge of the penalty area before curling an exquisite finish into the bottom corner with his right.
CONCACAF champions Pachuca attempted to reduce the deficit in the closing stages as they upped their intensity but Madrid netted a third in the 84th minute to completely kill any slim hopes of a grandstand finish. Lucas Vazquez was felled in the penalty area and Vinicius just about converted the subsequent spot-kick to secure the Intercontinental Cup for Los Blancos.
