Real Madrid have agreed a €10m fee with Liverpool to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold before his Liverpool contract expires.

The fee allows the Spanish side to sign Alexander-Arnold on June 1st and register the right-back for this summer’s Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold is set to sign a six-year contract with Real Madrid that will contain a release clause of €1 billion.

The 26-year-old was set to join Real Madrid when his contract expired on June 30th, but Real Madrid have decided to pay a transfer fee to register Alexander-Arnold early.

This summer’s expanded Club World Cup kicks off on June 15th. Alexander-Arnold is now in line to make his Real Madrid debut against Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal on June 18th. Real Madrid also face Pachuca (June 22) and Red Bull Salzburg (June 26) in the group stage.

Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool having scored 23 goals and provided 92 assists in 354 appearances. During his time with the Reds, he won two league titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

Why are Real Madrid signing Alexander-Arnold early?

Right-back has been a problem position for Real Madrid this season, in the absence of the injured Dani Carvajal.

The veteran’s ACL injury ruled him out for the bulk of the campaign with deputy Lucas Vazquez enduring a difficult season. Vazquez is expected to leave Real Madrid when his contract expires this summer.

Federico Valverde has been used as a makeshift right-back for periods of the season, though Alexander-Arnold is a more natural fit for new head coach Xabi Alonso’s wing-back system. Real Madrid had wanted to sign Alexander-Arnold for €40m in January, but Liverpool refused the bid as the club chased the Premier League title.
