In a recent segment on Youtube, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Real Madrid are eyeing a move for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate next year. Romano said,

“So Liverpool, there are still conversations ongoing over the new contract between Konate and Liverpool, but [there is] no agreement at this stage.

“It’s not something easy. That story was really with many different moments. In October and November last year, it was quite close, the contract extension verbally was very close, just with some final clauses.

“Then it changed the game around December and January. New discussions on the contract and no agreement. We’ve spent the last six, eight, nine months with no agreement between the parties.

“What about Real Madrid? Konate, for sure, is on the list of Real Madrid. For sure, he is one of the players they like, and for sure he is one of the players that they would like to bring in in 2026.

“But this will only happen if Konate doesn’t extend his contract at Liverpool.”

Konate’s Impressive Form At Merseyside

The France international had a solid campaign at the Merseyside club as he put in a string of solid displays at the heart of Arne Slot’s defence. Konate made 42 appearances for the Reds last season, scoring two goals and earning two assists across all fronts.

Konate did well to help the Reds win the Premier League last season. However, he has got less than a year remaining in his Liverpool contract, which could open the door for Los Blancos to come to a pre-contract agreement with the player this January.

Konate is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and excels at playing his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.94m, Konate is a strong presence in the air as well. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga.

We can expect the French sensation to add more quality to Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso’s defence. He has what it takes to nail down a regular starting spot at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
