In a recent report, Fichajes claimed that Real Madrid are facing stiff competition for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. It has been mentioned that Los Blancos would have to rival Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in the race to land the French talent next year.
Upamecano has enjoyed a decent run of form at the German club as he has put in a series of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The French defensive ace has featured in 14 matches for Bayern Munich this season across all fronts.
The 27-year-old has been a rock at the back for the Bavarian giants and deserves credit for making nine tackles, four blocks, five interceptions and 12 clearances in the Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 93.1% in the German top tier (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Allianz Arena will run out at the end of this campaign. Hence, Los Blancos could potentially land Upamecano on a free transfer next summer.

Upamecano is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.86m, the French talent is a strong presence in the air as well. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga if Los Blancos manage to get him on board next year.
We can expect Upamecano to add more bite and steel to Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso’s midfield. He is more than capable of earning a regular first-team spot at the Madrid club in the coming seasons.
At 27, Upamecano is about to enter his prime, which makes him a great option for Real Madrid to consider this January or at the end of this campaign. However, Alonso has to give him some time to settle into life in the Spanish capital.
