Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has named Fernando Hierro to lead La Fábrica as his academy director.

Riquelme said in a post on X that Hierro would run the Valdebebas complex and shape an academy built on structure, values and a route to the first team. He has also trailed an agreement for Raúl González to join his set-up as sporting director.

Framing his plans as a bid to restore identity with help from club legends, Riquelme has made headline pledges on recruitment too, saying Rodri and Haaland would sign or he would pay Real Madrid members’ season tickets.

Hierro spent 14 seasons as a Madrid player, lifting three Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles, two Intercontinental Cups and one UEFA Super Cup, several as captain.

After retiring he served as sporting director of the Spanish federation from 2007 to 2011, was Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Madrid in 2014-2015 and managed Oviedo in 2016-2017.

He then took charge of Spain at short notice before the 2018 World Cup in Russia following Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal after agreeing to coach Real Madrid.
