Real Madrid have signed Bernardo Silva on a two-year contract with an optional extra year tied to objectives. The club said in a statement that the agreement runs until 30 June 2028.
The Portugal international had been linked to Barcelona, who made a formal offer, and Atlético Madrid, where a deal was close before José Mourinho entered the equation.
He turns 32 in August, making him one of the most senior arrivals of the Florentino Pérez era. Beyond Joselu in 2023, the last comparable veteran signing came in Mourinho’s first spell with Ricardo Carvalho, who aspires to act as his conduit to the dressing room.
Silva arrives after nine seasons at Manchester City, whom he joined from Monaco in 2017, and he will reunite with Kylian Mbappé in Valdebebas. He scored twice in the 2023 semi-final as City swept past Madrid on their way to the Champions League.
The move follows a reset in relations between Jorge Mendes and Madrid, including talks at the Hotel Santo Mauro that finalised Mourinho’s contract and priorities. After Konaté and Dumfries, Silva is the third confirmed addition in a window expected to be busy.
Madrid view him as a market opportunity and a source of control in build-up. Though he has lost some pace, his touch remains exquisite. In Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 he will operate with Tchouaméni, and could also play further forward.
