A fresh update from OK Diario reveals that the upcoming clash against Girona is effectively a live audition for Ferland Mendy to earn a place in Real Madrid’s starting XI against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

It must be noted that Mendy’s return from injury is being treated with extreme caution. 

Within the club, there is full awareness of his importance, but also a recognition that his physical condition has often been unpredictable. 

That uncertainty is exactly why Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to manage his minutes carefully against Girona.

What’s the plan?

The plan is for Mendy to feature, but only in a controlled manner. Every minute will be monitored, every movement assessed. 

The objective is not to push him, but to prepare him. 

This means Real Madrid are effectively using this match as a conditioning exercise ahead of what will be their most important game of the season.
