Real Madrid returned to winning ways in La Liga with a 3-1 victory over Villarreal, a result that came as a relief following their heavy defeat to Atletico Madrid.
That loss not only dented their pride but also saw Barcelona overtake them in the La Liga standings.
The win helped restore some calm at the Santiago Bernabeu, but it also came with a touch of worry as two key players picked up minor injuries right before the international break.
Kylian Mbappe was substituted in the 82nd minute after feeling discomfort in his right ankle.
The French star appeared to limp slightly as he left the pitch and was replaced by Rodrygo.
While the issue did not appear serious, the sight of Madrid’s main man in visible pain sent a ripple of concern through the Bernabeu, especially with the El Clasico against Barcelona just three weeks away.
The injury seemed to occur when Mbappe scored his goal after coming into contact with Villarreal defender Rafa Marin. Replays showed the forward landing awkwardly, which may have caused the strain.
Despite finishing the match, Xabi Alonso decided not to risk him any further, opting for an early substitution as a precaution.
Reports from Mundo Deportivo later confirmed that Mbappe suffered a slight ankle sprain – nothing serious enough to keep him out for long.
He is expected to join the French national team for their upcoming fixtures against Azerbaijan on 10 October and Iceland on 13 October, although his participation will depend on how he responds to upcoming medical tests.
Meanwhile, youngster Franco Mastantuono also left the field with minor discomfort in his hamstring.
Alonso later clarified that the issue was not serious and the player would still be available for Argentina’s national team duties.
