In recent years, Real Madrid and Barcelona have maintained an unusual calm, united by their common goal of defending the European Super League project.
But that alliance may be nearing its end following Joan Laporta’s latest move.
Last week, the Barcelona president attended the EFC (formerly ECA) assembly in Rome – an event that has drawn attention in Madrid for what it could mean for the future of European football.
During the meeting, Laporta was seen warmly greeting PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, even sharing an embrace that many interpreted as a gesture of reconciliation and alignment with UEFA.
According to Diario SPORT, Barcelona’s renewed proximity to UEFA and Al-Khelaifi has not gone unnoticed at Real Madrid.
The Catalan club’s apparent willingness to reintegrate into UEFA marks a clear departure from the joint Super League stance that once united the two rivals.

Madrid, now the only club still openly defending the project, reportedly sees Barcelona’s latest actions as a sign of separation and possibly, a betrayal of shared principles.
Signs of strain have already emerged. Real Madrid recently filed a complaint to block Barcelona’s proposed La Liga match against Villarreal from being played in Miami.
On El Larguero, journalist Manu Carreno summed up the feeling within Madrid circles: “I have the feeling that something has changed after the hug between Laporta and Al-Khelaïfi. Relations between the two are going to be much more difficult.”
Laporta, meanwhile, confirmed Barcelona’s intention “to return to UEFA” and “build bridges,” signalling a major shift that could leave Real Madrid standing alone in its fight for the Super League.
