Real Madrid have stepped up their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck, according to Sky Sport Germany.
Returning Los Blancos manager Jose Mourinho is a keen admirer of the Germany international.
Madrid have already made contact with Schlotterbeck’s representatives as they assess defensive reinforcements for the new campaign.
David Alaba is leaving on a free transfer, while Eder Militao continues to struggle with injuries.
Antonio Rudiger has signed a new deal, but he is not the defender he once was. Dean Huijsen has not lived up to expectations following a big-money summer move.
Even though Ibrahima Konate has joined Madrid, they need a new defender. Schlotterbeck fits the bill.
The 26-year-old centre-back is among several players on the club’s shortlist, with Mourinho believed to be pushing for them to explore a deal.
He caught the eye in the Bundesliga last term, winning 63 percent of his aerial and 61% of his ground duels. He helped to keep 11 clean sheets in 28 appearances.
He also showed a knack for goals, bagging five while earmarking himself as one of the best ball-playing centre-halves in Europe.
Despite Schlotterbeck signing a new long-term contract with Borussia Dortmund in April, extending his stay at Signal Iduna Park until 2031, he could be on the move.
The defender attracted interest from several top clubs before committing his future to Dortmund, but fans were unhappy when they realised there was an exit clause (€50-60 million).
Schlotterbeck is refusing to be distracted by transfer talk as Germany prepare for their World Cup campaign.
However, Madrid’s interest will inevitably keep his future under the spotlight.
