Barcelona saw Robert Lewandowski leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season upon the expiry of his contract, and the No. 9 jersey is currently vacant.

Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez seems to be the chosen one for Barcelona to replace the Polish veteran.

The Argentine international has long been viewed as an ideal fit for Barcelona’s attack. The club even submitted a bid for him that Atletico turned down.

Now, according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Patrick Berger, Barcelona could face an obstacle in their pursuit of Alvarez, as Real Madrid have made enquiries about the 26-year-old.

Atletico Madrid would be willing to consider a sale if an offer in the region of €150 million arrived, and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez hinted at such a bid for a Galactico signing in the lead-up to the elections.

A familiar transfer battle could emerge

Alvarez is exactly the kind of forward many supporters would love to see leading the line at Camp Nou.

He combines elite work rate with technical quality, versatility and proven goalscoring ability at both club and international level.

However, Real Madrid’s interest instantly complicates the situation. Under Jose Mourinho, Los Blancos seem keen on revamping the squad and have the spending power to outbid the Catalans if it becomes a bidding war.

Real Madrid continue planning for the future

Real Madrid already have the likes of Endrick, Rodrygo, Arda Guler, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, among others, in their attacking ranks.

Signing Alvarez could become overkill in one position, and despite their admiration, it is highly unlikely that they would make a move unless a huge sale is on the cards.

For Barcelona, though, signing the Argentinian would mean adding an elite striker to an already stacked forward line of Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Anthony Gordon.

Hansi Flick’s team tend to score goals for fun, and all these forwards are excellent stylistic fits under the German manager, both with and without the ball.

At this stage, Madrid’s interest looks like a mere enquiry, and Barcelona will be keen to go ahead and wrap up Alvarez’s signature before their interest turns into something bigger.
