The Negreira case continues to cast a long shadow over Spanish football, further straining the already fractured relationship between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
In recent days, tensions have escalated once again after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez launched a renewed public offensive, not only against Barcelona but also against La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), accusing them of adopting a passive stance in the judicial process.
Against that backdrop, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso was inevitably drawn into the discussion while speaking ahead of his side’s Copa del Rey opener.
When directly asked about the Negreira case, Alonso aligned himself with the official stance of his club, but notably avoided inflammatory language or direct accusations towards Barcelona.
“We share the position of the club and the president. The most important thing is that, for the good of football, the truth about what happened comes out.”
Crucially, when the conversation turned to whether Barcelona’s sporting achievements should be questioned or diminished, Alonso chose not to cross that line.
At a time when stories around the case have often drifted into speculative territory, the Real Madrid coach refused to engage in any attempt to undermine Barça’s titles.

“No, no. I’m not going to get into that,” he noted.
That response carries weight. Despite the institutional pressure, Alonso deliberately distanced himself from questioning Barcelona’s honours.
Alonso was also asked to compare refereeing standards across different leagues, a topic that has gained prominence as the Negreira case has drawn international attention.
While he acknowledged the universal reality of human error in officiating, he again framed the issue as one of transparency rather than accusation.
“There’s a bit of everything in every league. As humans, we all make mistakes. But here, there has been a case that needs to be investigated.
“What has happened here is very surprising abroad, as there have been no consequences or accountability.
“That’s why it’s very important to find out what happened. It’s not normal, it can’t be taken lightly,” he noted.
