Real Madrid have faced a lot of flak this season for their relative inactivity during the January transfer window.

Indeed, the lack of efforts made to strengthen the team meant the club had to rely on its existing depth – a move that turned out to be costly as Real Madrid are set to end the campaign with no major trophies.

However, a recent report from Cadena SER has revealed that Real Madrid had attempted to bring in defensive reinforcements in January by trying to get rid of one of their veteran defenders.

Real Madrid had offered termination letter to Alaba

As per the report, it is revealed that Real Madrid had offered David Alaba the letter of freedom during the January transfer window.

A letter of freedom typically means that Real Madrid were ready to terminate Alaba’s contract by paying out for the contract. In exchange, the defender would leave the club, thus taking weight off the club’s wage billl.

Real Madrid’s decision to hand Alaba a termination letter was a part of the club’s larger ploy to bring in either Kyle Walker or Trent Alexander-Arnold in January.

Unfortunately, Alaba had no desire accepting the termination letter and wanted to continue at the Santiago Bernabeu, even as the defender was struggling with injury.

As a result, Real Madrid were unable to make a move for either Alexander-Arnold or Walker, who ended up joining AC Milan.

Real Madrid, of course, had to wait six more months to get their hands on Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join the club on a free transfer.

Real Madrid have also brought in Bournemouth prodigy Dean Huijsen. And given these recent additions, it will be interesting to see whether or not the club look to push for the exit of Alaba this summer.
