David Alaba faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid and could be on the move this summer.

Diario AS claims Madrid are open to parting ways with the Austrian international, whose contract expires next summer.

The former Bayern Munich star moved to Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer in 2021 but has struggled with frequent injuries over the last couple of seasons.

Alaba has recently suffered a relapse in his recovery from the meniscus injury he sustained in April, ruling him out of the ongoing Club World Cup.

He had only returned to action in January after being sidelined for more than a year with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 33-year-old is no longer in Madrid’s plans. Manager Xabi Alonso prefers new signing Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio as the first-choice centre-back pairing.

The presence of Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger would further limit Alaba’s opportunities.

The Austrian wants regular game time to prepare himself for next year’s World Cup.

There haven’t been any concrete offers for Alaba, whose hefty €11.5 million annual salary may deter interested clubs.

Having signed Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Los Blancos are targeting a left-back in the transfer window.

Alvaro Carreras is their top target, but Benfica’s hefty valuation is problematic.

Alonso has identified Spanish full-back Alejandro Grimaldo as an alternative, having worked with him at Bayer Leverkusen.

Franc Garcia is the only reliable left-back in the squad, and he has been impressive at the Club World Cup.
