The World Cup 2026 did not arrive at the best of times for Real Madrid. The Merengue team has finished the last two seasons without a trophy, and some of its players have been going through a poor run of form.
As a result, players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eduardo Camavinga, Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono all surprisingly missed out on the chance to play in this World Cup with their respective teams, and this was the World Cup with the lowest of Real Madrid players in the last decade.
However, the competition itself has turned out rather differently, and several Merengue players have played leading roles for their teams. This phenomenon is quite clear from a report from Diario AS which highlights that Real Madrid has been the club with the most MVP awards, 8, as the group stage of the World Cup concludes.
The white club is followed by Liverpool (4), and third place on the podium is taken by Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain (3 each). Surprisingly, FC Barcelona, the team with the highest number of its players playing the World Cup, has not seen any of its 16 players win any MVP award so far.
If seen in terms of national leagues, La Liga has 13 MVP awards to its name so far, as in addition to Real Madrid, Villarreal (2), Real Sociedad (1), and Atletico Madrid (1), have also seen their players win MVP awards.
However, the Spanish league trails the Premier League in this regard, as the English competition boasts of 17 MVPs, and is followed by Bundesliga with its 7 MVPs.
Thus, despite Jose Mourinho’s wish to see the teams of Real Madrid players losing as early as possible, the players themselves are showing no signs of any urgency to leave the World Cup, and, in fact, seem set to prove themselves in the biggest event in international football.
