Fran Gonzalez is making the most of his opportunity at Real Madrid, with the young goalkeeper stepping closer to the senior setup.
With Thibaut Courtois currently sidelined due to injury, Gonzalez has been promoted as the second-choice option behind Andriy Lunin, which is a significant moment in his development.
Working closely with Courtois has clearly had a strong impact on the young goalkeeper, who did not hide his admiration for the Belgian shot-stopper.
When asked during an interview with AS what it is like to train alongside him, he said,
“It’s a dream. You watch him and learn. And he helps me a lot when I make a mistake.
“He tries to correct me. It’s a privilege few people get to experience.”
Furthermore, speaking about the guidance he has received from the Belgian, Gonzalez revealed,
“He always tells me I overthink things when he watches me train. It’s something I try to fix, but sometimes it’s hard.”
Beyond technical ability, Gonzalez highlighted the mental qualities that set Courtois apart from others.
“That serenity and calmness he has on the field, knowing he’s the best. That confidence to make those impossible saves.”

With Courtois unavailable, Gonzalez now finds himself closer to first-team action, a responsibility he is prepared to embrace while still showing respect for the injured star.
“It’s always bad news when Courtois gets injured. I hope he recovers soon. Until now, I was focused on Castilla, and now I’m back with the first team.
“Courtois is the best in the world, and his absence leaves a huge void.
“In the meantime, I’ll do my best to perform at my highest level if I have to come in for him or Lunin.”
Gonzalez also spoke about his relationship with Lunin, who is currently leading the line as Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper.
“He’s another great goalkeeper; you can see that every time he’s had to come on. He’s a really nice guy and he looks out for me too.”
Despite being on the fringes of the senior team, Gonzalez remains focused on his long-term growth.
When asked about his preference between regular football with Castilla or being part of the senior squad, he concluded,
“Time will tell. For now, we’re focused on trying to get promoted and continuing to improve individually.”
