It is no secret that Real Madrid are currently on the hunt for new centre-backs, as the club prepare for life without David Alaba and potentially Antonio Rudiger.
Real Madrid’s search for a new centre-back has been accentuated by a triple injury blow against Atletico Madrid, which saw Rudiger and Raul Asencio both pick up injuries.
In order to beef up their defensive ranks next season, Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Dayot Upamecano. But it appears the player is closing in on renewing his contract at Bayern Munich.
With Upamecano no longer an option, Real Madrid have set their sights on Nico Schlotterbeck as their top defensive target next season.
This is according to SportBILD (h/t Diario AS), which suggests that the Dortmund star has emerged as the ideal alternative for Upamecano.

Regarded as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, Schlotterbeck might not become a free agent next summer like Upamecano, but he could be available in the market, with his contract at Dortmund running out in 2027.
The German international has shown no signs of renewing his contract, meaning he could be available in a cut-price deal next summer.
Earlier reports have indicated a potential price tag of €50 million, which could prove to be a bargain for a player of his calibre.
Known for his ability in the build-up play as well as his versatility, Schlotterbeck could be an excellent option for Real Madrid. His leadership, coupled with his status as a left-footed centre-back, makes him a perfect partner for someone like Eder Militao.
However, Real Madrid could face stiff competition from clubs like Barcelona in the race to sign Schlotterbeck. So it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the German international this summer.
