Real Madrid have begun the search for a new manager, despite appointing Alvaro Arbeloa on Monday to replace Xabi Alonso. The Arbeloa regime got off to disastrous start, with Los Blancos exiting the Copa del Rey at the hands of Albacete. It is the second trophy to escape Real Madrid in a matter of just four days.

Arbeloa had decided to leave out stars Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni for the trip to the Carlos Belmonte, feeling they would benefit from the rest. However it backfired dramatically. Following the match, Arbeloa said that he would do the same again, but did take the blame for the defeat.

Real Madrid on the hunt for new manager

According to Cadena SER, Real Madrid are already on the hunt for a new manager. This had started before the Copa del Rey tie, and thus has little to do with Arbeloa’s performance. Los Blancos are sounding out potential options for next season, implying that Arbeloa is expected to continue until at least the end of the season.

Arbeloa has contract beyond the end of the season

It was reported on Wednesday that Arbeloa has been handed a new deal that goes beyond the end of the season. That no doubt is in part to give him more authority in the dressing room, as an interim manager may not be afforded the same respect if the players know his time is finite. However on Tuesday, Arbeloa could not answer decisively whether he was a permanent appointment or a temporary one.

Real Madrid’s options in the summer

It is not yet clear who Real Madrid might pursue in the summer. Xabi Alonso was expected to be in charge for some time, and even before his appointment, Jurgen Klopp was the only other name seriously linked to the Bernabeu, but he has already played down links to the job after Alonso’s exit.
