La Liga giants Real Madrid are set to be without the services of key defender Antonio Rüdiger for the next two months.

This comes after the German international was forced under the knife to solve a long-standing knee issue.

Rüdiger was for his part in from the off once more this past weekend, as Real Madrid locked horns with arch rivals Barcelona in the finale of the Copa del Rey.

En route to an eventual 3-2 defeat for his side, however, the former Chelsea man, for the umpteenth time this season, looked in serious discomfort throughout.

Rüdiger was in turn forced into a premature departure from proceedings in extra-time, before picking up a red card for his over-the-top protests.

And now, as alluded to above, the stopper has undergone a surgical procedure.

As per a statement across Real Madrid’s official website and social media platforms on Tuesday:

‘Antonio Rüdiger underwent surgery today for a tear in the outer meniscus of his left knee. The operation was performed by Dr Manuel Leyes under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical services. Rüdiger will begin his recovery process shortly.’

Ensuing reports point towards Rüdiger facing up to a spell of around two months on the sidelines.
