Real Madrid 'to target' Mourinho as Benfica lose hope

José Mourinho’s future at Benfica is increasingly uncertain as links with a return to Real Madrid gather pace.

AS reports that the Luz club now view his departure as likely amid Madrid’s growing interest, adding that he is the leading candidate, with Álvaro Arbeloa’s continuation said to be ruled out.

Mourinho is seen as an ideal fit to oversee a major rebuild of the Spanish club’s squad, who have gone two seasons without major honours.

A return to the Santiago Bernabéu could be triggered by a release clause worth three million euros, allowing him to leave before his Benfica contract expires. Benfica have also seen Gianluca Prestianni’s suspension extended.

Mourinho remains under contract with Benfica until 2027. For now, Rui Costa’s hierarchy are focused on preparing next season, with any renewal only to be considered later if he stays.
