La Liga giants Real Madrid recently made the call to knock back the chance to bring in Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk this coming summer.
That’s according to Relevo, who have on Monday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Spain’s capital.
It is of course common knowledge that those in a position of power at Real Madrid are on the lookout for reinforcements at the back with a view to next season.
As much comes after Los Blancos’ failure to land Leny Yoro over the summer was followed by both Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão joining David Alaba as long-term injury absentees.
With Antonio Rüdiger set to turn 33 in March, securing fresh blood at the heart of defence has therefore emerged as something of a must at the Santiago Bernabéu.
In turn, it may come as something of a surprise to learn that, just recently, Florentino Pérez and co. rejected the opportunity to sign one of the game’s very best central defenders.
As per a report from Relevo:
‘Virgil van Dijk’s agents contacted Madrid’s management to inform them of the centre-back’s willingness to join the Bernabéu from the summer of 2025 (when his Liverpool contract expires). However, the proposal was rejected.’
As much comes with Real Madrid on the lookout for a different profile, eager to invest in a younger, more long-term option.
