Real Madrid’s Elections Are a Real-Life Soap Opera

The 2026 Real Madrid elections for president and the Board of Directors are set to take place this Sunday, June 7, marking one of the most significant moments in the club’s modern history.

For the first time in exactly two decades, Real Madrid’s socios will head to the polls for a genuinely contested presidential election. Incumbent Florentino Pérez, who has run unopposed in the last three elections (2014, 2019, and 2024), finally has a challenger during unarguably his most turbulent time in charge of the club.

His opponent is 37-year-old businessman Enrique Riquelme.

2026 Real Madrid Elections: Tradition vs Galáctico

Riquelme, the CEO of renewable energy company Cox Group, has been a Real Madrid socio for over 20 years, satisfying one of the club’s strict requirements to run for president. Like Pérez, he also meets the financial guarantees (having a net worth that is at least 15% of Real Madrid’s revenue) required to contest the election.

Enrique Riquelme has long called for overhaul in the club’s structure, reportedly wanting to contest the elections for many years but never comfortably meeting the criteria. With Perez’ sudden decision to announce elections in a fiery press conference on May 12th, Riquelme now has a plan to bring his vision to life.

His campaign slogan, “Legado y Futuro” (“Legacy and Future”), focuses on taking Real Madrid from what he calls “Version 2.0 to Version 3.0.” His argument is that under Pérez’s unopposed, high-spending two-decade reign, Real Madrid transformed from a members’ club into a soulless corporate machine where the socios, like himself, felt left out.

Riquelme’s campaign has put forward these promises:

  • 50% Membership Discount: Riquelme has pledged to cut membership fees in half until Real Madrid wins its next UEFA Champions League trophy.
  • La Ciudad del Socio: One of the centerpiece projects of his campaign is a complete redevelopment of the Valdebebas training complex, currently known as Ciudad Real Madrid Florentino Pérez. Riquelme wants to transform it into a “Members’ City,” where it will be like a mini Real Madrid park where socios can enter and have common activities to do together and grow Madridismo.
  • A Return to Spanish Superstars: The recent lack of Spanish representation within Real Madrid’s first team has irked Riquelme. Following the announcement of Spain’s World Cup squad, Riquelme promised to sign a major Spanish star if elected, claiming he already has a verbal agreement in place. He has also vowed to move away from the Galáctico model and instead build around elite Spanish talent. Manchester City’s Rodri has frequently appeared in discussions as one of his future signings.
  • Sporting Structure Overhaul: Riquelme has also promised to appoint club legend Raúl González as Sporting Director, while former captain Fernando Hierro would oversee La Fábrica, Real Madrid’s academy system. He believes Florentino Perez meddles too much in sporting affairs, and Riquelme would like to have a clear structure where departments don’t overlap.
  • The Ticket Lottery: Believing the current season-ticket waiting list is unfair to many fans, he plans to create a lottery system that would release 10,000 memberships to supporters based on luck. (Forbes)

So… Can Florentino Pérez Win the 2026 Real Madrid Elections?

Old man Florentino is chilling somewhere and hasn’t even worried about running much of a campaign. Although Real Madrid has endured two trophyless seasons, Pérez appears confident that the socios will not turn against him. After the work he has done for the club, including becoming the president with the most trophies won for Real Madrid, he can rest easy knowing he will still have a majority come deadline day.

His efforts so far have been relatively quiet, though he did take a direct shot at Riquelme during a recent press conference, describing his challenger as a figure connected to the “dark era” of former president Ramón Calderón.

Oh, he also formally announced the return of Jose Mourinho via an AI generated video. That’s not minor.

Beyond that, Pérez has largely allowed his legacy to speak for itself.

Still, the 2026 Real Madrid elections have produced one area where both candidates have gone completely over the top.

Both Sides are Making Insane Promises

The entire soccer world knows that the best players in the world always go and play for Real Madrid, unless they have an affinity for Barça. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Ronaldo Nazario, Zidane, Kylian Mbappé and more have donned the Camiseta Blanca as a Galáctico signing. As the election deadline comes closer, both parties have announced their plans for the next Galáctico. Both are absolutely berserk.

Florentino Perez’ $175 million Promise

Just three days before the election, Pérez dropped what Spanish media quickly labeled a “bomba.” He promised that, if re-elected, he would authorize the biggest transfer in Real Madrid history, reportedly worth around $175 million.

Appearing on Spanish television program Horizonte, Pérez refused to reveal the player’s identity but did provide several clues.

According to his comments, the target:

  • Does not play in the Premier League.
  • Plays for a consistent Champions League club.
  • Is a young prospect.
  • Is worthy of Galáctico status.
  • Is not Michael Olise, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, or Jérémy Doku.
  • Is not a defender.

This announcement has sent the whole world buzzing. Fans are frantically trying to decode the interview and wondering who it could be. I am personally leaning towards someone like Jamal Musiala or Désiré Doué – they fit the criteria perfectly. Other names fans have speculated are Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, Kenan Yıldız, Julián Álvarez, and possibly even Lamine Yamal.

Most expensive Real Madrid signings of all time.

Enrique Riquelme and the Figo gambit

In the year 2000, a relatively unknown construction magnate named Florentino Pérez Rodriguez shocked the soccer world by winning Real Madrid presidency against Lorenzo Sanz. Sanz had just delivered two Champions League titles in three years, yet a single masterstroke defeated him: the promise of Luís Figo.

Now Enrique Riquelme wants to do the same to Florentino Perez.

Appearing on the popular Spanish television show El Hormiguero, he unveiled a Real Madrid jersey bearing the name of Erling Haaland, confidently declaring that the Manchester City striker would join the club if he won the 2026 Real Madrid elections.

The move went down as bad as it did when Perez tried it 26 years ago.

Haaland’s representatives, including his father Alfie Haaland and agent Rafaela Pimenta, quickly dismissed the claim as completely false. Manchester City officials were also said to be furious, with reports suggesting legal action was being considered over the use of the player’s name and image in a foreign political campaign.

But but but … many older Real Madrid supporters remember hearing similar denials back in 2000. Until the results were announced, Figo continued denying any chance of a move, stating he was happy in Barcelona.

Within 10 days of Perez becoming Real Madrid’s 14th President in 2000, Luis Figo was out of the blue-and-red, and wearing white.

Decision Day

Voting in the 2026 Real Madrid elections begins at 9:00 a.m. local time in Madrid on Sunday, June 7, which corresponds to 2:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT) and is expected to last around 10 hours.

The choice facing Real Madrid’s members is simple in theory but enormous in consequence.

Do they embrace Enrique Riquelme’s vision of reconnecting the club with its traditional roots, even if some of his promises seem wildly ambitious? Or do they place their trust in Florentino Pérez one more time?

After twenty years without a real contest, the future of the world’s biggest soccer club is finally up for debate.
