Real Sociedad have confirmed Ander Barrenetxea has sustained a left adductor longus injury, ruling him out of the final two matches and the World Cup.

The club said in a statement that his return will depend on the characteristics of the injury and how his condition evolves, adding it was sustained during Thursday’s Girona v Real Sociedad match at Montilivi.

He felt a sharp pain in the first half in Girona and was forced off, with Pablo Marín coming on.

Barrenetxea was among the 55 players in Luis de la Fuente’s preliminary list, and he made his senior debut in the previous call-up.

It is a harsh setback for a player in fine form, and a concern for the national team, who are not well stocked with natural wide options.
