Real Sociedad have won the Copa del Rey three times from seven finals. As reported by as.com, these finals frame their cup story.
Their first triumph came on 8 April 1909, as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián, a 3-1 win over Español de Madrid at Campo del Madrid. George McGuinness scored on 30 and 80 minutes, Charles Simmons the other. Giralt replied.
Barcelona denied La Real in four finals. The 1913 replay finished 2-1 after 2-2 and 0-0, and 1928 needed a third match, 3-1 after two 1-1s. Later came 3-0 in 1951, through César and Gonzalvo III, and 1-0 in 1988 at the Santiago Bernabéu via Alexanko on 67 minutes.
The second crown came on 27 June 1987 at La Romareda. Real Sociedad drew 2-2 with Atlético de Madrid, López Ufarte and Txiki Begiristain scoring on 10 and 36 minutes, cancelled out by Da Silva and Rubio. Luis Arconada saved Quique Ramos’s kick in a 4-2 shootout.
The latest landmark was 3 April 2021, the delayed 2019-20 final and first all-Basque showpiece at La Cartuja. La Real beat Athletic 1-0, captain Mikel Oyarzabal converting a penalty on 63 minutes after Iñigo Martínez fouled Portu. It delivered a third Copa and settled that head-to-head in their favour.
The rivalry has often been finely balanced. In 1984’s last 16, Athletic advanced 5-3 on penalties after 0-0 in Bilbao and 1-1 in San Sebastián. In the 1987 semi-finals, La Real progressed after 0-0 at San Mamés and 1-0 at Atotxa, Bakero scoring.
