Chelsea captain Reece James has posted a three word message to Dario Essugo after the midfielder suffered a thigh injury.

Essugo only joined Chelsea this summer from Sporting Lisbon in deal thought to be worth around £18m, and made his debut at the Club World Cup.

The 20-year-old was signed to provide much needed cover for Moises Caicedo so the Blues can give the Ecuadorian a rest as and when he needs it.

Essugo has yet to appear in the Premier League this season, and will now have to wait even longer to make his league debut.

Whilst on international with the Portugal under-21 squad Essugo picked up a thigh injury, which he’s subsequently undergone successful surgery on.

Chelsea confirmed the surgery through a club statement and said Essugo would begin his recovery at Cobham with the club’s medical staff.

Chelsea captain Reece James added a three word message in the comment section on Essugo’s Instagram post saying:

“Speedy recovery brother.”

Chelsea currently now have Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos and Caicedo as their only fit senior midfielders as they approach a busy run of games.

Romeo Lavia returns to Chelsea training

However, despite losing Essugo, Chelsea have been boosted by the news of Lavia returning to full team training after an injury suffered against Benfica in the Club World Cup.

Lavia has been plagued by injury issues since joining from Southampton in 2023, but when he has played he’s shown just how important he is for this Chelsea team.

The Belgium international will be key for the Blues once again this season providing he can stay fit, and it will be interesting to see if he’s in the squad for Saturday’s game against Brentford.
