Jon Ander González Esteban has been appointed to referee the decisive second leg between Almería and CD Castellón, a call that lands days after controversy over an unawarded penalty on Lucas Alcázar in the first game at SkyFi Castalia.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the tie is finely poised after Saturday’s 1-1 draw, but Castellón supporters remain aggrieved. Protests centre on Lopy’s tug on Alcázar, an incident neither the referee nor the VAR judged to be a penalty.

The choice of González revives unhappy memories for Castellón, particularly from this season’s defeat at El Molinón against Sporting de Gijón.

That match produced one of their most debated moments of the campaign. Pablo Hernández’s side thought they had scored through Camara in a move that could have changed the game, but the goal was ruled out for Alberto being offside.

The call sparked significant scrutiny, with repeated replays and many fans, along with several refereeing analysts, questioning whether Alberto’s position genuinely affected the phase enough to cancel the goal.

In the same fixture, González awarded a clear handball penalty after a Camara shot, needing VAR intervention to give it.
