Sunderland’s pre-season could give Régis Le Bris a closer look at leading academy prospects.

According to Sunderland Echo, Le Bris and his staff are expected to use the friendly programme to build fitness, assess senior options and possibly reward Academy of Light youngsters.

Some have already trained with the seniors, while others will press their claims after strong under-21 seasons.

Jenson Jones, 19, has signed a new two-year deal, is highly rated by Le Bris, can play full-back or midfield, has featured in the Carabao Cup and made numerous Premier League benches.

Goalkeeper Joe Cowan, 16, is well regarded and, despite strong depth, pre-season often brings younger keepers into first-team training and trips for experience.

Midfielder Jaydon Jones, 19, brother of former Sunderland player Harrison Jones, can play as a six or an eight, though competition is intense given Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fée and Habib Diarra.

Trey Ogunsuyi, 19, an attacking option after loans at Falkirk and Shrewsbury Town, can play through the middle or from the right, and Sunderland must decide whether another loan is the best next step.

Finn Geragusian, 18, is tall and powerful out wide or centrally, is considering a new contract and wants clarity on his pathway, so meaningful pre-season involvement could strengthen the club’s case.

Jack Whittaker, 19, is also weighing new terms after an impressive under-21s season, his ability to play wide, as a ten or even as an eight offering flexibility in friendlies.
