Régis Le Bris has highlighted Trai Hume’s importance to Sunderland’s Premier League season, praising his reliability and adaptability. According to Sunderland Echo, the defender has kept a regular starting place while several promotion mainstays have struggled for minutes.
After Robin Roefs’ hamstring injury, Hume has played more minutes than any team-mate across all competitions. He has also logged 2,584 Premier League minutes, the most in the squad, ahead of Roefs and centre-back Omar Alderete, with Enzo Le Fée and Noah Sadiki completing the top five.
Le Bris says Hume can play left-back, right-back, midfield or right wing, and also centre-back in a back three, a versatility the squad needs.
Earlier this season Hume covered on the right wing during Bertrand Traoré’s AFCON absence and injury. With Chris Rigg in strong form there, that switch seems unlikely for now, though Le Bris still sees it as a handy option in tough away games, allowing a 5-4-1 and movement wide, inside or into a double pivot.
Hume will return to Wearside later this week after Northern Ireland face Wales on Tuesday night. He captained his country in a 2-0 defeat in Italy last week, ending their World Cup hopes. He said they were in the game for long spells, brief chaotic periods and a well-timed second-half goal hurt them, and while disappointed he looked ahead, stressing lessons for a young side missing key players during the campaign.
